Triggering Content Policy

1. Purpose
Roots of Resilience is s a supportive space for men to discuss mental health, personal struggles, and life challenges. We recognise that conversations may involve sensitive topics such as suicide, self-harm, abuse, and trauma.
This policy is designed to:
- Protect users from distressing or harmful content
- Encourage safe and supportive discussions
- Reduce the risk of triggering vulnerable individuals
2. What Is Triggering Content?
Triggering content refers to material that may cause strong emotional or psychological reactions, particularly for individuals who have experienced trauma or mental health challenges.
Examples include:
- Suicide or self-harm
- Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse
- Violence or assault
- Substance misuse
- Severe mental health distress
3. General Guidelines
When discussing sensitive topics, users must:
- Be respectful and considerate of others
- Use non-graphic, non-detailed language
- Focus on support, recovery, or seeking help
- Avoid content that could encourage harm
The goal is to allow open discussion while minimising potential harm.
4. Content Warnings
Users should include a content warning (CW) at the beginning of posts that discuss triggering topics.
Examples:
- CW: Suicide discussion
- CW: Abuse / trauma
- CW: Self-harm
This allows others to make informed decisions about what they choose to read.
5. Prohibited Content
The following content is not allowed on the platform:
Graphic or Detailed Descriptions
- Explicit descriptions of self-harm or suicide
- Graphic accounts of abuse or violence
Encouragement of Harm
- Promoting or encouraging self-harm or suicide
- Glorifying harmful behaviours
- Sharing methods or instructions
Harmful Advice
- Suggesting unsafe coping mechanisms
- Discouraging users from seeking professional help
Content That May Endanger Others
- Romanticising trauma in a way that could influence vulnerable users
- Sharing content intended to shock or distress
6. Sharing Personal Experiences
We understand that sharing personal experiences can be helpful and healing.
When doing so, please:
- Avoid graphic detail
- Focus on how you are coping or seeking support
- Include a content warning
- Be mindful of how your story may affect others
7. Responding to Others
When replying to someone discussing sensitive topics:
- Be empathetic and non-judgemental
- Avoid dismissing or minimising their experience
- Do not provide professional or medical advice unless qualified
- Encourage seeking appropriate support if needed
8. Moderator Actions
Leaders may take action to protect users, including:
- Editing or removing triggering content from groups
- Adding content warnings where missing
- Locking discussions
- Contacting users with guidance
- Suspending users for repeated violations
These actions are taken to maintain a safe environment.
9. Crisis Situations
If a post suggests that a user may be at immediate risk of harm:
- Leaders and moderators may intervene and provide crisis support information
- The situation may be escalated in line with our Safeguarding Policy
However, the platform is not a crisis service, and users should seek immediate professional help if needed.
10. Reporting Content
If you encounter content that violates this policy, please report it.
You can report by:
- Using the report feature (if available)
- Contacting a moderator
- Emailing: safeguarding@rootsofresilience.org.uk
All reports will be reviewed as soon as possible.
